▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒ OVERVIEW ▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒
Welcome to SFE-mail: the complete InterNet E-mail solution for SPITFIRE
The following is required to run SFE-mail:
■ IBM PC, AT, i286, i386, i486, Pentium, PS/2 or 100% BIOS Compatible
Clone
■ Spitfire 3.x BBS System
■ FidoNet compatible front-end mailer (ex. FrontDoor, BinkleyTerm,
D'Bridge)
■ FidoNet compatible netmail tosser (ex. Alexi/Mail, SFToss, DogFight)
■ Node or point address in a Fido-style net that has a UUCP gateway
(ex. FidoNet, DragonNet)
SFE-mail allows you to offer InterNet E-mail to your users with minimal
or no cost to you and without the need for complex instructions to tell
your users how to send and receive messages to the InterNet and the
numerous systems connected to it. Before SFE-mail, this was possible
but required a very complex and often misunderstood set of instructions
to explicitly tell your users how to use your net's UUCP gateway. Even
if you system is a Fido<->UUCP gateway, you will find SFE-mail a
valued toll as it will shield your users from having to learn the
gateway's addressing interface.
Some advanced features of SFE-mail:
■ Detects and runs under Windows, OS/2, DESQview, TopView and TaskView.
■ Fully networkable, share multiple concurrent instances.
■ Sends messages via any Fido-style mailer such as FrontDoor,
BinkleyTerm, D'Bridge, Portal of Power or InterMail.
■ Supports full 4D addressing so points can use SFE-mail.
■ Supports GIGO and Act-up gateway addressing formats.
■ Supports domain and bang!path InterNet addressing.
■ Sends international fax via the InterNet.
■ Seamlessly integrates with your existing Spitfire message base.
■ Optionally attaches a "signature" file to all outbound e-mail.
■ Optionally "flavors" outbound e-mail to CRASH or HOLD.
(Default: NORMAL)
■ Optionally "kills" sent e-mail from Spitfire's message base.
■ Logs all E-mail activity (ASCII/ANSI/RIP bulletin generator
included!)
▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒ SETUP ▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒
UNZIP the SFE-mail distribution archive to any directory you wish.
Edit the SFEMAIL.CFG file to your system's specifications.
The following is the format for SFEMAIL.CFG:
Line #1: Name of your BBS
Line #2: DOS path to Spitfire's home directory (Ex. C:\SF)
Line #3: Spitfire's netmail conference #
Line #4: Your netmail address (Full 4D addressing supported)
Line #5: Netmail address of your net's UUCP gateway
Line #6: Flavor desired for outbound netmail (CRASH | HOLD | NORMAL)
Line #7: Delete sent messages (YES | NO)
Line #8: DOS path to your mailer's netmail directory (Ex. C:\FD\MAIL)
Line #9: Type of gateway addressing (GIGO | ACTUP)
Line #10: Your personal registration code (If registered)
Line #11: Name used by SysOp to Login BBS
Line #12: SysOps real name or name to convert Line #11 to.
This should all be very straightforward to set up. If you don't know
the address of your net's UUCP gateway(s), check your nodelist. One
flag to look for is GUUCP. If there is no gateway for your local area
code, you may wish to route netmail to the gateway to avoid long
distance charges. If you anticipate a lot of E-mail traffic, your net
may force you to poll the gateway directly.
Line #9 is dependant on the type of gateway software being run by your
net's gateway. FidoNet GUUCP nodes use GIGO-style addressing. Other
gateway nodes may use ACT-UP gateway software or a similar packages
that use much different addressing scheme. Check this with your
gateway operator.
NOTE: FidoNet SysOps can FREQ FAQ from 1:1/31 for FidoNet's gateway
policy as well as a list of all gateway addresses.
If you don't have a functioning netmail conference in your Spitfire
message base, see your netmail tosser's documentation. This is
necessary as e-mail FROM the InterNet gateway will arrive as standard
netmail to be tossed into Spitfire's message base. SFE-mail takes over
from there to make sure the message's CRC is correct. Most tossers
foul up Spitfire's CRC checking when dealing with gated InterNet E-mail
▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒ OPERATION ▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒
Operation of SFE-mail couldn't be simpler:
1. Run SFEMAIL.EXE BEFORE you run your NetMail scan. It must be run
prior to the scan as many netmail tossers will arbitrarily mark
"sent" any message in the conference designated for netmail whether
it is actually tossed or not.
2. Run SFEMAIL.EXE AFTER you run your netmail toss. Obviously, you
must toss netmail to Spitfire before SFE-mail can process it.
3. If you wish to feature bulletins for E-mail activity and tips,
SFEMBULL.EXE is included in the SFE-mail distribution archive. See
SFEMBULL.DOC for details.
Sending E-mail from your SPITFIRE BBS is now as easy as sending a
message to a local user! Just enter the actual InterNet address in the
To: field and enter the rest of the fields just as you always have. No
gateway address or headers in the body of the message are needed!
If the address is too long to fit in Spitfire's To: field, you can use
the method below:
Address used in example:
archive-server@ames.arc.nasa.gov
-or-
ames.arc.nasa.gov!archive-server
Enter as follows:
To: archive-server
Subject: @ames.arc.nasa.gov [subject]
-or-
To: ames.arc.nasa.gov
Subject: !archive-server [subject]
Where [subject] is the actual subject of the message.
NOTE: A space is required between the address and the subject of the
message.
To send a fax via the InterNet, use the following format:
To: CyberWare Systems/Dept. 203
Subject: @fax 1-513-231-6087 [subject]
The phone-number must include the country code (1=USA/Canada) and
[subject] is the optional subject of the fax. The InterNet server that
sends the faxes supports many area codes in the USA & Canada (though
not all of them) as well as Japan, Denmark, Germany, New Zealand,
Australia, Korea, Portugal, Sweden, The United Kingdom and several
other countries. New areas are added constantly and the server will
notify you if the area you attempt to fax is not currently supported.
Don't try the example! The 513 area code is not currently supported
and will just get you a "bounce" message from the server.
NOTE: Spaces are required between the @fax keyword, the phone number
and the subject. The '/' in the To: field will be translated to
a carriage return upon delivery. This enables multiple lines in
the fax header.
To post to a Usenet newsgroup, use the following format:
To: alt.bbs.internet
Subject: @news [subject]
NOTE: Spaces are required between the @news keyword and the subject.
If you wish to have a disclaimer or advertisement for your BBS follow
each message, create the file SFEMAIL.SIG in SFE-mail's home directory.
It will be appended to every piece of outgoing E-mail. Of course, this
is a REGISTERED ONLY feature. (There has to be SOME incentive to
register!)
That's all there is to it. The world is yours!
